Founded in 1987, ELS initially covered the Germanspeaking market in Europe acting as a distributor for lasers and laser-related products manufactured by US companies. About ten years later, the strategic direction of the company changed. ELS started to design and manufacture test and production systems for the Photonics industry as well as advanced solid-state lasers. As of today, ELS is organized in three product divisions that address clearly separated markets:
- The Laser Division develops and manufactures advanced solid-state lasers. ELS is one of the key promoters of the thin disk laser for scientific and advanced technical applications. The CadiYAG (another novel laser) utilizes a specific pumping scheme to deliver a flat top beam profile that is ideal for many industrial applications. High-power fiber lasers, high-power diode laser systems and cw optical parametric oscillators with narrow linewidth radiation complement the product range.
- The Mechanics Division designs and produces customer-specific systems that combine the key capabilities of ELS. Multi-axis high-precision motion systems are engineered with machine vision, advanced sensor technology and material processing in the manufacturing of sophisticated production and test stations for advanced applications in industry and research.
- The Photonics Division develops and manufactures test, alignment and attachment systems for opto-electronic devices. Standard devices include transmitters, receivers, bidirectional modules, pump lasers and tunable sources as well as high power devices.
All three divisions provide products and customized solutions on the highest technological level. Equally important is the reliability of the products and systems for production purposes. ELS continuously strives to provide systems and products with the maxmium value for the customer.
Laser Division All lasers developed and manufactured within the laser division incorporate highly advanced technology. Based on thin-disk technology, the VersaDisk and MonoDisk lasers are at the leading edge of state-of-the-art laser technology. Due to the low-stress design of these lasers, they are able to emit high ouptput power and still maintain a perfect Gaussian intensity profile. The tunable fundamental output is in the near infrared and harmonic options are available for applications that require visible and UV outputs. The VersaDisk is a technology platform. At 1030 nm, the laser emits up to 100 W with a M² value of less than 1.1. Equipped with a second harmonic stage, it provides more than 15 W at 515 nm. Strong pulses with a high energy content are achieved by adding Q-switch or modelocked operation. The MonoDisk is ideally suited to pump other systems (Ti:Sa or dye lasers). Unlike the VersaDisk, this laser is designed exclusively for this specific application. Also offered are the SpectroStar (a narrow-band continuous-wave optical parametric oscillator for high resolution IR spectroscopy), the FiberStar (a fiber laser exceeding 100 W cw output with perfect beam profile) and the DiodeStar (a high-power cw diode laser system).
Mechanics Division The Mechanics Division designs and manufactures advanced customer-specific and high-precision motion systems (down to 4 nm repeatability) for test, measurement and production purposes. A key technology is the multiaxis high-precision motion integrated with modular process development and production software. Sophisticated machine vision functions complement this package. Micro welding, soldering or gluing processes are employed for the permanent connection of separate parts. To maintain the exact position during the attachment process is critical in these high-precision tasks. ELS engineers comprise one of the most experienced teams in the field of reducing these shifts to the absolute minimum in many various applications.
Photonics Division ELS manufactures customized characterization and production systems for optoelectronic devices. These include:
- laser diode bar, die and chip-on-submount testers,
- LED testers on wafer level, burn-in stations, alignment
- and welding stations for active and passive optoelectronic devices.
- Also offered are gluing stations for planar waveguides like multiplexers, splitters or modulators.
Our prime objective is to design and build systems that set the standards in performance and reliability. ELS provides innovative solutions to unique customer requirements that result in reduced process times and increased productivity. Careful engineering guarantees high reliability and extremely low cost of ownership. The Photonics Division works closely with leading manufacturing specialists of scientific and commercial organizations to fully understand and address the production tasks of tomorrow's world.
