REFERENCE MATERIALS

ISOTOPIC MEASUREMENTS

• Performing primary isotopic measurements and certifying primary and isotopic Certified Reference Materials (CRMs).
• Production of nuclear isotopic CRMs (largest provider globally).
• Quality control for nuclear safeguards laboratories and organisation of proficiency testing for analysis of uranium and plutonium containing materials (REIMEP) and nuclear signatures in the environment (NUSIMEP).

NEUTRON DATA MEASUREMENTS

• High resolution neutron reference measurements in support to reactor safety and waste transmutation.
• Specialised studies of neutron-material interactions.
• Establishment of Neutron Data Standards (NDS) and the development of a pulsed radiation source for fundamental physics.

RADIONUCLIDE METROLOGY

• Basic radionuclide metrology and ultra-low level gamma-spectrometry, including the development of new measurement methods and equipment.
• Preparation and certification of primary radioactivity standards for research, medicine and industry.
• Co-ordination of and participation in international comparisons on radioactivity measurements, e.g. for medical applications.
• Measurements and evaluation of radioactive decay data.
• Ultra-low level radioactivity measurements in the underground laboratory (223 meters below ground level).

FOOD SAFETY AND QUALITY

• Development and validation of analytical methods for food and feed analysis
• Networking with food and feed laboratories for intercomparison exercises and method validation
• Ad-hoc support to food and feed crisis situations
• Co-ordinator of all food and feed activities in the European Commission\'s Joint Research Centre
