Sample introduction: Nebulizers |
Introduction of sample to plasma is one of the most problematical areas in ICP. The pneumatic nebulizer-spray chamber system is the most commonly used because of its low cost and simplicity but it has a number of drawbacks, principally: low analyte transport efficiency; high sample consumption; memory effects; transient acid effects and post column broadening with chromatographic techniques. Direct introduction of a liquid sample into the plasma offers several advantages over the conventional spray chamber arrangement - 100 per cent analyte transport efficiency
- Low solution uptake and nebulizer gas usage, typically below 100µl/m
- Reduced memory effects allowing very short rinse times between samples
- No spray chamber introduced interferences such as transient acid effects
- No post column broadening when using chromatography
These features are beneficial for example in the analysis of biological, semi-conductor and forensic samples and when the sample is expensive, hazardous or of limited quantity. One drawback of direct injection nebulizers however is the tendency to clog if particulates are present, due to the smaller dimensions of the solution capillary and glass annulus areas. In addition, it is possible with incorrect adjustment to cause the nebulizer tip to melt because of its close proximity to the plasma base. The d-DIHEN overcomes both of these disadvantages and offers significant improvements in performance and economy with the following features - The ability to optimise operational characteristics with a finely adjustable “tuneable” solution capillary
- Excellent sample-plasma interaction due to small droplet size, narrow droplet distribution and low mean droplet velocities
- No need for a special, high pressure sample pump
- Long (5mm) optimal distance of nebulizer tip from torch intermediate tube, reducing the chance meltdown
The d-DIHEN is supplied complete with spare solution capillaries and nozzle.
