During preparation for the analysis of elements and isotopes at ultra trace concentrations, samples are subject to contamination from different sources, for instance impurities from vessels used in the course of preparation. The atmosphere in the lab on the other hand may be influenced by acids used in cleaning procedures. Acid vapors corrode the surfaces of metals and other materials within the lab, thus starting a internal contamination.
Therefore cleaning processes should be performed in closed systems, to be opened only if the acids are at low temperatures. With the PicoTrace Subboiling Cleaning Device the back flow of acid fumes from the cleaning processes to the lab will be avoided.
Our cleaning concept starts from the experience, that in ultra trace element analysis the inside surfaces of the vessels after standard application are usually much cleaner as the outside surfaces are. Traditional cleaning processes transfer the contamination from the outer surfaces of the vessels to those surfaces, reserved for uncontaminated solutions only. During the cleaning process, the cleaning agent becomes more and more contaminated. The whole process is more a dilution of contaminants but an uncompromising cleaning procedure.
The PicoTrace Subboiling Cleaning Device avoids this fundamental disadvantages. Condensed acid fumes, cleaned themselves by a subboiling process, purify in independent processes the outside and inside of the vessels.
Exchangeable PTFE rods allow different sized vessels to be introduced in the cleaning process. A PFA covered heating mantle transfers the heat in the lower part of the system. Depending on the field of use of the system and the size of the vessels to be cleaned, the height of the system may be selected. The attached drawing, being a first draft only, displays a height of 200 mm.

The system is manufactured from solid pure PTFE. It fits on the PicoTrace hot plate SFH 5030 HD.
