For lasers used in Raman spectroscopy there are three fundamental requirements: high output power in a narrow emission band, extremely reliable long term wavelength stability, and an emission wavelength matched to the employed detector technology. Moreover, most customers demand a diffraction limited, gaussian beam for excellent spatial resolution and small bandwidth. With these features a system performs easily all tasks in high resolution Raman microscopy. So we developed XTRA, a hands-off laser system based on extensive experience with highest brightness diode laser systems. XTRA is a compact, wavelength-stabilized, diode laser system with sophisticated thermal management and microprocessor-controlled performance. XTRA is thus a first choice for all Raman spectroscopy, and allows high spatial resolution Raman microscopy applications. The XTRA system comprises a compact Raman laser head with integrated control electronics, and an external power supply (minimising the impact of thermal and electronic radiation on the laser head). Integration of a high quality optical isolator into the beam path within the laser head reduces unwanted back-reflection of laser power into the laser source itself. This two-component design results in an ultra-stable wavelength performance combined with an extremely narrow bandwidth. Furthermore, the wavelength is actively controlled to maintain the long-term frequency stability (wavelength drift < 30 GHz). For industrial applications we included a RS232 interface to ease maintenance and control of the laser via a standard PC. Further wavelength ranges (730, 940, and 980 nm) are presently under investigation and will be available soon. Currently we offer a free-beam version with more than 300 mW output power, and alternatively a fiber-coupled version of the XTRA with a perfect Gaussian beam and 200 mW output power.
