Separation: Field Flow Fractionation |
The Eclipse is a state-of-the-art separation system using the asymmetric flow Field Flow Fractionation (AFFF) technique. The Eclipse integrates easily with Wyatt’s multi-angle light scattering (MALS) instruments: DAWN, miniDAWN Tristar, as well as the Optilab rEX. The combined system provides absolute size and molar mass distributions of the particles/molecules separated by the AFFF unit. The combined system solves the most difficult sizing tasks in the macromolecular and colloidal arenas. Its resolution is similar to sedimentation equilibrium, but it surpasses even this benchmark-sizing tool when one considers its flexibility, speed, and ease of use.

The Eclipse is invaluable and indispensable in key areas of research and development in molecular biology, nanotechnology, and environmental analyses, including the separation and characterization of proteins and aggregates, liposomes, emulsions, viral particles, polysaccharides, polymer latex particles, colloidal soil suspensions, humic substances, chemical mechanical polishing slurries (CMP), and more.
The Eclipse provides unmatched separation power for samples in the sub-micrometer range. Distinct advantages of the Eclipse over conventional “particle separators” or Hydrodynamic Chromatography (HDC) include:
- Ultra high resolution comparable to ultracentrifugation
- Flexible separation of inhomogenous samples
- Large dynamic range from a few nanometers up to a several micrometers
- Connects to modern detection instrumentation
- Fractions can be collected and used for off-line analysis (with electron microscopy, MS, ELISA etc.)
- Fully automated mode possible
- Turn-key system for asymmetrical Flow-FFF
- Built-in integration with DAWN detectors and ASTRA software
- Chassis stackable with Wyatt DAWN and Optilab rEX detectors
- Eclipse software controls HPLC pumps and autosample
- Channel is robust, but light-weight
- Operating pressure up to 30 bar
- Easy to change membranes and clean the system
- No dead volume in the channel, which minimizes system peaks
- Stainless steel frit, robust and corrosion free
- Extremely low surface area
Developed after more than a decade of experience with FFF and DAWN detectors, the Eclipse represents the only integrated, turn-key system on the market!
