Workshop overview
The magnitude of the arsenic problem and the seriousness of the adverse health outcomes resulting from exposure to arsenic make arsenic the single most important environmental contaminant. In Bangladesh and India alone, millions of people are affected by high levels of arsenic present in drinking water and foodstuff. As a consequence, regulations on arsenic have become more stringent. This workshop covers robust, sufficiently sensitive and modern methods for arsenic speciation, which allow proper quality control and risk assessment. The workshop further includes the respective sample preparation steps, which can be considered as the bottleneck of any method regarding the reliability of the obtained results.
Program - theory - (1 day)
General aspects of arsenic speciation
- Occurence, fate and toxicity of arsenic species in environment and living organisms (E. Larsen, Denmark)
- Hyphenated techniques in speciation analysis (Y. Madrid, Spain)
- Multilelement speciation
Selected methods for sample treatment in arsenic speciation (E. Sanz, Madrid)
- Physical treatments: Pressurized Liquid extraction and ultrasound probe sonication
- Classic extraction methods vs ultrasound assisted species extraction
- Stability problems, recovery and species interconversion
Validation in speciation (R. Morabito, Italy)
- Analytical characteristics
- Use of Certified Refernce Materials
- Species identification
Uptake of As by proteins (Mª A. Palacios, Madrid, Spain)
- Introduction in proteomics
Program -Practical exercices -(1day)
Analytical Solutions
- Practical exercises in arsenic speciation using previously discussed methodology and HPLC-ICP-MS detection.
- Discussion Forum and closing session
Each participant will be provided with guidelines (GLP in Sample Treatment), covering the experimental methods. Documentation on the results of the workshop will be handed out to all participants.
Registration
Maximum number of participants: 20 Course fee: 200 € The registration includes workshop participation, all meals including the workshop dinner and the workshop's social event.
Please Note! Your registration should have reached us February 27th, at the latest. However, since the number of participants is limited early registration is recommended. Your registration will become binding by the written confirmation of the workshop organiser. Payments are to be made after receipt of the invoice, where you will find payment details included. For cancellations after March 3rd no refund is possible. For further inquiries and registration at short notice please call: +34 91 394 4318.
Travel planning
Transport The EVISA course meeting will be held at the campus of the Complutense University of Madrid, Faculty of Chemistry. The nearest metro station is "Ciudad Universitaria" ( Line Nº 6, "Circular"). A detailed map of the workshop site will be delivered upon registration.
A taxi from the airport to the city centre is aproximately 20-25 €. The best way to get downtown, either from the airport or from the large distance train stations (Atocha, Chamartín) is by Metro, the trip may last about 1 h. A map of the subway network is available at: http://www.metromadrid.es/, price for a single ticket is 1.00 €, a 10-trip ticket 5.80 €. The latter is as well valid for buses. Further information on public bus transport can be downloaded at : http://www.emtmadrid.es/index.html?lang=eng. A searchable road map of the capital can be found at: http://callejero.paginasamarillas.es/home.asp.
Accomodation Participants are requested to search a hotel by their own. A big variety of hotels and hostals in Madrid can be found at http://www.hotelclub.net. If you need help or advice please contact the workshop helpdesk at: cdietz@quim.ucm.es
