kinetic energy discrimination (KED)

A process that uses collisions with a neutral gas to reduce the axial velocity of larger, molecular ions more extensively than smaller, elemental ions so that the transmission efficiency of elemental ions through a collision/reaction cell is larger than the transmission efficiency of molecular ions.
