Third International Conference on Remediation of Contaminated Sediments

Finding Achievable Risk Reduction Solutions is the theme of the Third International Conference on Remediation of Contaminated Sediments (New Orleans, Louisiana; January 24-27, 2005). This biennial conference was previously held in Venice, Italy, in 2001 and 2003. In addition to the typically strong interest in characterization and standard remediation approaches, the Conference program will address management considerations, policies and guidelines that affect decision-making, the definition of remediation success, and lessons learned.

Over the past decade, considerable progress has been made worldwide in assessing and managing contaminated sediments. Advances in scientific understanding, engineering approaches, and remediation technologies are slowly making a difference in our ability to respond to contaminated sediment sites. Nonetheless, we still face significant challenges in effectively combining technical knowledge, assessment and management frameworks, and governing policies and regulations to achieve human health and environmental protection goals. The technical complexity and potentially high costs associated with contaminated sediment remediation require that we seek and develop meaningful and reasonable risk reduction strategies and the policies to support them.
