Description
Tanning is the process of converting the protein (collagen and its related proteins) of a raw hide or skin into leather. The tanning process also gives the necessary feel and physical characteristics to the leather. This document is included because of the environmental impact of leather tanning. There are several types of tanning processes with different environmental impacts. The most commonly used method is chrome tanning (about 90%), other methods are vegetable tanning and tanning with alternative agents. These methods are described together with the environmental impacts and solutions in the downloadable document. Publication date: September, 2005
