Artifacts during the extraction of butyltin compounds from solid samples !
(15.12.2003)
Using isotope dilution methodology based on multiple species-specific spikes, J.I. García Alonso and his co-workers were able to demonstrate that tributyltin is degraded in a step-wise fashion to DBT and further to MBT.
Degradation was most pronounced during extraction from solid materials when using alkaline extraction with TMAH (up to 52% degradation of DBT to MBT after 4 hours) or microwave-assisted extraction at prolonged process time (ca. 16 minutes). The reverse butylation of tin and butyltin compounds was not observed. The isotope dilution methodology is not able to correct for incomplete extraction but allows the study and optimisation of conditions where quantitative extraction is obtained by minimising the errors which occur in the whole analytical procedure.
