Initiative for Science in Europe (ISE), a unique new platform

The Initiative for Science in Europe (ISE) was officially launched on 25 October 2004 at an ISE conference in Paris, France. The launch marked the coming together of some 35 European scientific organizations to structure and give greater weight to the input of the scientific community into science policy-making and to promote the European Research Council (ERC).
ISE, being launched in the wake of the ongoing debate regarding
the establishment of a European Research Council (ERC), is an
independent and informal platform for organizations committed to the
scientific and technological development of Europe. It provides a
common forum to advocate independent scientific advice in European
policy-making and stimulate the involvement of European scientists in
the design and implementation of European science and technology policy.
ISE now includes organizations such as the European Life Sciences
Forum (ELSF), the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO), the
European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), the European Physical
Society (EPS), the European Science Foundation (ESF), the European
Southern Observatory (ESO), the European University Association (EUA),
EuroScience, the Federation of European Biochemical Societies and many
more representative of all scientific disciplines ranging from
mathematics and chemistry to the social sciences and humanities. ISE
membership is open to all European organizations.
