Interests:
Development of new/improved methods for trace metal analyses including sample processing procedures, analytical techniques and instrument development and investigations into the fundamental operation of the graphite furnace and elucidation of the mechanisms of atom formation. The former area includes development and use of immobilized ligands for concentration/matrix separation of trace metals; improved digestion -sample decomposition procedures for marine sediments and biological matrices, including conventional pressure decomposition and new microwave assisted techniques, novel in-situ preconcentration procedures for volatile element species and on-line flow injection approaches for general trace metal preconcentration. Studies relating to the more fundamental aspects of the graphite furnace embracee international collaborative projects and the information gained from these studies is now being utilized to permit optimization of the interfacing of the graphite furnace with other instrumental analytical techniques to improve their performance and versatility. Recently, a novel tandem source for ultratrace analysis - Furnace Atomization Plasma Emission Spectrometry - has been designed based on the establishment of an atmospheric r.f. plasma inside a graphite tube furnace. The characterization of this source for use in multielement optical emission and mass spectrometry is being undertaken.
