Fresh herbs collected in a non contaminated rural area were collected, mixed and processed as for drug production by Herbapol S.A. Mixed Polish Herbs were then comminuted and sieved in conditions preventing contamination with metals and next homogenized by mixing in a plastic drum. After preliminary homogeneity testing (XRF) the material was distributed into dark glass bottles. Homogeneity testing by neutron activation analysis (determination of Br, Ce, Co, Cr, Fe, K, Mn, Na, Rb, Sc) revealed, that INCT-MPH-2 can be considered homogeneous at least for sample weight of 100 mg. The whole lot of the material was sterilized by electron beam radiation to assure long-term stability. This stability is being monitored during storage. Certification of the candidate reference material was based on the world-wide interlaboratory comparison in which 109 laboratories from 19 countries, participated using various analytical methods and techniques. Data evaluation was performed by means of software package ACQS-1. Several criteria were also employed to decide whether the overall mean can be given the status of recommended (certified) or information value. The validity of certified values was confirmed for several elements using definitive methods developed in this Laboratory. Recommended values are assigned for: Al, As, Ba, Br, Ca, Cd, Ce, Cl, Co, Cr, Cs, Cu, Eu, Hf, Hg, K, La, Lu, Mg, Mn, Nd, Ni, Pb, Rb, S, Sb, Sc, Sm, Sr, Ta, Tb, Th, V, Yb, Zn
Information values are assigned for: Fe, Mo, Na, K, Ti, Tl, U, W.
