The JY 38 Plus is a computer-controlled sequential ICP system with a 40.68 MHz ICP and a monochromator with high resolving power. The high-frequency generator (patent Durr/Jobin-Yvon) operates at 40.68 MHz and at a maximum power output of 2.3 kW. Both frequency and output power are stabilized. The nebulizer, the nebulization chamber and the ICP-torch are mounted on a cassette. Cassettes suitable for work with aqueous solutions, with organic solutions, with solutions having high salt contents and with solutions containing fluoric acid, respectively, are available and can be rapidly exchanged. The cassettes are coded for automatic choice of the according gas flows and h.f.-power. The height of the ICP-torch can be varied pneumatically. The demountable burner can be operated with a coater-gas flow enveloping the aerosol flow. This is of use for work with ultrasonic nebulization and for the determination of alkali elements; in the latter case the power of detection is enhanced by a factor of 5-10 as compared to conventional torches. The 1-m Czerny-Turner monochromator may be provided with several holographic gratings (dimensions: 110 mm x 110 mm): - a 2400 lines/mm grating resulting in a wavelength coverage of 170-770 nm and a reciprocal linear dispersion of 0.4 nm/mm;
- a 3600 lines/mm grating for a wavelength coverage of 170-500 nm and a reciprocal linear dispersion of 0.26 nm/mm.
- a 2400 lines/mm grating blazed for the wavelength range 170-770 nm in the 2nd order, and resulting in a reciprocal linear dispersion of 0.20 nm/mm.
The slit widths are adjustable from 0 to 75 µm and the slit heights from 0 to 20 mm. With the 2400 lines/mm grating a practical resolution down to 5 pm in the 1st order and 3 pm in the 2nd order may be obtained. The wavelength selection and the data acquisition are controlled by a microprocessor (Spectralink) whereas data processing is performed by a separate computer. The reproducibility of the wavelength selection is +- 0.001 nm and within 7s any analytical wavelength in the range covered by the instrument may be addressed. In work at wavelengths below 190 nm the monochromator and the optical path are purged with argon. A second small monochromator (wavelength range: 200-650 nm) is optionally available and can be used for measuring a reference line. The instrument includes an IBM XT Personal Computer with Floppy and Winchester disc, colour video display and plotter. The software is written in PASCAL
