Millbrook Instruments Limited was founded in 1995, with a philosophy to use advanced technology to provide simple solutions to real world analysis problems. Ten years on, Millbrook still retains the flexibility to respond to customer needs with an expanding range of unique desktop instruments for surface analysis. Millbrook has also matured into a company with the stability to support those products for many years to come.
Over the years, Millbrook has been recognised for its achievements in developing the MiniSIMS (originally known as the Chemical Microscope). Most significantly, Millbrook won the Annual Achievement Award of the Scientific Instrument Makers' Company in December 1999. This Award is given each year in recognition of the single product that is judged to have made the greatest contribution to the British scientific instrument industry. The instrument design was awarded Millennium Product status by the UK Design Council in 1998. In 2000, the MiniSIMS was named as one of R&D Magazine's Top 100 Products, which represent the most technologically significant products going on sale in the USA during the year.
Millbrook has also won numerous awards for achievements in overseas trade. The most recent accolade was in April 2005, when the company won a Queen’s Award for Enterprise in International Trade in recognition of outstanding sustained growth in export sales.
In January 2002, the corporate structure of Millbrook was reorganised with the formation of a parent company Millbrook Scientific Instruments plc in preparation for an application for admission to the OFEX investment market. This marked the beginning of a new chapter in Millbrook’s history. Since then there has been an increasing focus on international sales, building on the strong MiniSIMS user base initially established in the UK. The investment has also allowed recruitment of the key people needed to support a higher level of sales, and an acceleration of an ambitious development programme for the MiniSIMS and related products.
Millbrook has also broadened its product range through diversification into other areas of surface measurement. The Group has Distributors in 20 countries around the world, and a global user base of around 150 installations. Please visit the websites of our sister companies for further details. Aquila Instruments Limited specialises in measurements of the optical properties of thin films and surface coatings, and Micro Materials Limited specialises in measurement of surface hardness (nanoindentation), toughness (repetitive impact testing) and coating adhesion (scratch testing).
In December 2004, Millbrook Scientific Instruments plc moved from OFEX to a listing on the larger Alternative Investment Market (AIM) of the London Stock Exchange.
