Ústav jaderného výzkumu Řež (Nuclear Research Institute), abbreviation ÚJV Řež, was founded on basis of governmental act in June 10th in 1955.
In early short period, the Institute was run/managed by the gowernment board and then assigned to the Czechoslovak Academy of Science. During establishing the ÚJV Řež, there were great funds released that enabled developing the research and begining the design projects followed by a construction of objects and experimental facilities in Řež immediately.
The original mission of the Institute were activities connected with a basic research in a field of nuclear physics, radiochemistry and nuclear energetics, to produce radioisotopes and train new scientists. An experimental reactor VVR-S was put into service in September 24th in 1957. In 1962, the first stage of building up the ÚJV Řež was completed by a construction of a new radiochemical pavilion for working with high activities. Gradually, it turned out that the specification of the ÚJV Řež, on the basic research in a frame of the Czechoslovak Academy of Science did not match the assurance of NPPs construction situations and their evaluation. For that reason there was a delimitation of the Insitute and its major part was assignet to a scope of the former Czechoslovak Atomic Energy Commission in January 1st in 1972. The ÚJV Řež became an independent contributory organization and in this arrangement remained for 21 years.
There was a structure redeveloment of the research programme in the Institute. In this period, the research activity was mostly adjusted on built up and operated VVER type NPPs, fast reactors and requirements of the state supervision on nuclear safety.
In December 31st in 1992, the ÚJV Řež was transformed by a company limited by shares in the second round of privatization. The main problem of this transformation was orientation on customer needs with connection of a cost shock, which was managed during two year transformation period. It was a result of a great effort devoted to the transformation of the Institute activity orientated on the client needs.
With the transformation, the Institute took a place in a similar process, already running in nuclear centers in some states of Western Europe.
In November 2002, there was an extention in business subject of activity of Nuclear Research Institute Řež plc by design and engineering services as a result of buying a part of a company ENERGOPROJEKT Praha a.s., division of design a supply activities. Activity of the new established division ENERGOPROJEKT Praha resumes, especially in field of power engineering on more than 50-year-old tradition and know-how its predecessor ENERGOPROJEKT Praha.
Nowadays, the Institute provides wide range of expertises and services for operators of the nuclear power plants in the Czech Republic and abroad, supports central state institutions in the Czech Republic in domains of strategic energetics control and management of radioactive waste (Ministry of Trade and Industry), provides independent professional expertise for the State Office of Nuclear Safety, provides development of exploitation of ionizing radiation and irradiation services for basic and applied research, health service and industry, provides research and services for radioactive waste disposal, productiona of radiopharmaceuticals, education and training of expert and scientific specialists and many other activities.
Apart from that, the Institute also functiones in nonradiactive domaines, for example in energetics domain, chemical industry and environmental protection.
In domain of an international co-operation the ÚJV Řež is succesfull in extending and diversifing its connections. It is based on a traditional bond on International Atomic Energy Agency. After joining the OECD in 1995, the international activities of the ÚJV Řež expanded into intensive contacts with NEA/OECD, where the ÚJV Řež is co-operating in most of the working groups especially in a frame of CSNI.
In a frame of preparation of the Czech Republic for the EU accession the Institute joined 45 research programmes in a frame of the fifth frame programme of EU and currently it strives succesfully for a participation in frame of the sixth frame programme.
In a frame of bilateral co-operation, the Institute collaborates in defferent domains with leading institutes abroad such as IRSN and CEA (France), GRS (Germany), NRC (USA) and IAE Kurcatova (Russia).
