The Chromium (VI) Directive (2003/53/EC) applies to cement and products containing cement marketed in the EU from 17th January 2005.
The objective of this legislation is to reduce the incidence of chromate-induced allergic dermatitis caused by exposure to cement. The level of soluble Cr(VI) will be limited to a maximum of 2ppm by mass of cement when water is added.
In most cements, the soluble chromium (VI) levels will be controlled by reducing agents added to the cement at the grinding stage.
The length of time over which the reducing agents will be effective is limited. Typically, a manufacturer declares a two-month shelf life.
