Unlike other nickel species, nickel tetracarbonyl (commonly referred to as nickel carbonyl) can be found as a gas or as a volatile liquid. It is mainly found as an intermediate in the carbonyl process of refining. By virtue of its toxicokinetics, it is the one nickel compound for which short-term inhalation exposures are the most critical. With respect to dermal exposures, although biologically possible, absorption through the skin has not been demonstrated in humans, nor have any dermal studies on animals been conducted.
