ORNL: Geochemical and Molecular Mechanism Controlling Mercury Transformation in the Environment
The Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) Science Focus Area (SFA), funded by the Department of Energy's Subsurface Biogeochemical Research program, focuses on the biogeochemical transformations that govern mercury (Hg) speciation at the sediment-water interface, and, particularly, the processes controlling the production of methyl mercury. The SFA is a multi-scale, multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional research program that integrates geochemistry, microbiology, molecular biology and molecular simulations to understand Hg behavior in the field.
