The 7th European Workshop on Laser Ablation is being held at the University of Sheffield on 13-15 June. The deadline for advanced registration as well as oral and poster presentations is 1st May. The registration fee includes the ‘ice-breaker’ on Sunday evening, refreshments and lunch on Monday and Tuesday, and the Conference Dinner (Monday evening). Up to ten student bursaries will be available covering the cost of bed and breakfast accommodation during the meeting (nights of 12-14 June).
The Workshop seeks to bring together leading experts and young scientists to exchange information and ideas concerning the practice of laser ablation in the context of plasma spectrochemical analysis. The main programme gives emphasis to ICP methods, but for the first time additional topics of LIBS and aerosol mass spectrometry are introduced. The programme includes presentations from many international authorities: S Becker (Research Centre Julich, Germany), F Boue-Bigne (Corus, Rotherham), S Chenery (BGS, Keyworth), AG Cox (Sheffield University), R Devonshire (Sheffield University), D Guenther (ETH, Zurich, Switzerland), D Green (New Wave Research), T Jeffries (British Museum, London), A Koenig ( Cetac Technologies, USA), J Laserna (University of Malaga, Spain), P Mason University of Utrecht, The Netherlands), R Parrish (NIGL, Keyworth), M Sabsabi (NRCC, Montreal, Canada), S Wilson (USGS, Denver, USA).
Main topics are:
Day 1: Laser fundamentals; ablation phenomena; instrumentation; LIBS; aerosol and particle characterisation
Day 2: Analytical applications: steels, geologicals, ceramics; environmental, nuclear, bio-medical, forensics; process measurement; high precision measurement; standards; interlaboratory studies.
An instrument exhibition on laser-based chemical analysis systems is being held in conjunction with the Workshop and exhibitors include: Agilent Technologies, Andor Technology, Cavendish Instruments Ltd, CETAC Technologies, CEM, Cryoservice, GV Instruments, Jobin Yvon, New Wave Research, Nu Instruments Ltd., Ocean Optics, Perkin Elmer Instruments, Spectro Analytical and Thermo Electron Corporation
Sheffield can be easily reached by train from Manchester Airport and there are good links from Leeds (Leeds/Bradford Airport) and London. Trains also run from the ferry port of Hull. There is a range of hotel accommodation within easy walking distance, or a tram/bus ride, of the University.
