chemical modifier

A chemical substance that is added to the sample in an electrothermal vaporizer to change the volatility of the analyte or matrix. Typically the modifier is added before the drying and ashing stages of the heating program to separate the vaporization of the analyte from the potential interferences of the matrix components.
