EU legislation: Packaging and packaging waste
The Directive 94/62/EC on packaging and packaging wastes establish limits for the presence of heavy metals (lead, cadmium, mercury and hexavalent chromium) in packaging materials. The Directive lays down essential requirements related to the composition and reuse, recovery and recycling of packaging waste. On this legislative basis a number of European packaging standards have been published.
The directive 94/62/EC limits the content of heavy metals such that the sum of concentration levels of lead, cadmium, mercury and hexavalent chromium present in packaging or packaging components shall not exceed 100 ppm by weight. EU Directive 94/62/EC Consolidated version from 2005
