electron ionization (EI)

Electron impact ionization or as currently preferred electron ionization represents the classical method of ion generation in mass spectrometry. The analyte is introduced into the evacuated ion source (<10^-6 mbar) and subsequently ionized by collisions with energetic electrons (routine 70 eV) generated by thermal emission from a heated filament.
