Interests:
Dr. Hintelmann is internationally recognized as a leader in applying stable Hg isotopes in environmental studies. He developed a variety of methods to analyze environmental samples for their contents of Hg species using ICP-MS. Dr. Hintelmann’s research focuses on the speciation and fate of metals in the environment. His group is exploring the use of stable isotopes to unravel the biogeochemical cycling of mercury employing ICP/MS techniques. He has been involved in a number of field studies, covering diverse ecosystems from the Arctic to the Amazon, including whole ecosystem experiments such as METAALICUS and wetland restoration projects in the San Francisco Bay area. He also investigates the fractionation of heavy elements in the environment, whereby the determination of Hg isotope fingerprints holds great potential to track mercury from pollution sources to environmental receptor sites.
Instrumentation:
As a member of Trent University¹s Institute of Mass spectrometry (TUIMS) we have access to a variety of state of the art analytical equipment, including:
Collision cell ICP-MS
ICP-TOF/MS
LC/MS
LC/MS-MS
LC/MS-TOF/MS
