Interests:
Research on toxic metals has a long tradition at IMM. At present, the research focuses on
  • sources and patterns of exposure to toxic metals in the general population
  • doses resulting from the exposure
  • factors modifying the exposure and dose
  • highly exposed and susceptible subgroups
  • associations between metal exposures and health effects

The research includes the metals of greatest current health concern, i.e. arsenic, cadmium, methylmercury, inorganic mercury and lead, as well as host factors and essential elements such as iron, zinc and selenium that can interact with these metals.

The research is to a great extent based on measurements of (metals and) biomarkers of exposure and effects in biological media. We use various analytical techniques such as high resolution ICP-MS, AAS, HPLC-HG-AFS and CV-AFS. We have clean room facilities which enable analyses of very low concentrations of elements.
