Shimadzu introduces its improved compact tabletop energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence EDX-720 spectrometer
The EDX-720 is released with improved sensitivity for Lead (Pb) and Cadmium (Cd) which are most important elements for the environmental analysis of green product (see RoHS below). Furthermore, EDX-720 also has new attractive functions such as the auto-selection of suitable calibration curve (e.g. PE/PVC calibration curve), the auto-reduced measurement time or the report generator for the RoHS/WEEE analysis.
Analysis using X-rays
Energy Dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometer (EDX) is the instrument to perform qualitative and quantitative element analysis in the range from 6C/11Na to 92U and is the ideal tools for non-destructive applications. EDX is used in many different applications areas in the chemical, electronic and food industries as well as refineries. It can be used with solid, powder and liquid samples. This is achieved by applying X-ray to the sample and then analysing the re-emitted element characteristic fluorescent X-ray. Security functions effectively prevent exposure to X-rays at all times.
Easy handling and improved detection limits
With a simple push of a button, elements ranging from sodium to uranium can be analysed quickly and easily. In addition, the software enables measuring conditions to be adapted to the sample characteristic. For precise analysis of lighter elements the systems can be operated optionally under vacuum or under a helium atmosphere. The built-in five-filter assembly effectively reduces interference and increases the signal quality. This way, the limits are markedly improved for detection of e.g. lead, cadmium, chlorine or chromium.
High flexibility
The large sample chamber accepts samples up to 300 mm diameter and 150 mm height. Additionally, many accessories are available, for instance a precision stage for accurate sample positioning as well as various sample turrets for 8 or 16 samples. The detector system requires liquid Nitrogen (N2) but a thermoelectric cooled detector system is also available. For the measurement of small samples, the X-ray is decreased easily using the two optional collimator assemblies. Two different assemblies are available:
The exact positioning of small samples can be monitored accurately using an optional colour CCD camera. WEEE and RoHS
In addition, the EDX series offers, with respect to WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) and RoHS (Restriction of the use of certain Hazardous Substances in electrical and electronic equipment) simple and fast decision-making criteria in order to adhere to these directives. The EDX systems enable analyses of mercury, cadmium and lead in polymer building parts (such as casings and cable solderings) down to the ppm range. During EDX analysis, hexavalent chromium, PBB (polybrominated biphenyls) and PBDE (polybrominated diphenyl ether) are detected as elemental chromium and elemental bromine.
