For nearly four decades, Prof. Hon. Jacques Buffle has built sensors and assembled models on the fundamentals of aquatic environmental chemistry.  The head of the CABE (chimie analytique et biophysicochimie de l'environnement), who retired from the Department of inorganic, analytical and applied chemistry in Autumn 2008 is the author of more than 280 publications in the field of environmental chemistry.

The October issue of the flagship journal Environmental Science and Technology is paying tribute to the achievements of Prof. Buffle. In this Tribute Issue, a group of researchers working in this area, including Buffle himself, present overviews and updates on the nature of aqueous colloids and the mechanisms behind the biogeochemical cycling of elements in the aquatic environment involving dissolved organic matter.

The issue has been organized by Herman P. van Leeuwen, Kevin J. Wilkinson and Raewyn M. Town, with the enthusiastic guidance from the editorial staff of the journal, notably managing editor Dr. Darcy J. Gentleman and associate editor Prof. Laura Sigg and should be of interest for all those involved in environmental speciation analysis.
