Certified reference materials for selenium speciation

The main issues to be controlled during the analysis of biological tissues for the speciation analysis of selenium are:
  • quantitativeness of extraction of the species of interest from the sample material
  • preservation of the different species during the analysis
  • avoidance of isobaric interferences in mass spectrometry
  • overcoming the problem of low analyte levels (lack in sensitivity, preconcentration)

CRMs play a major role in the development and validation of methods and for quality control. The following certified reference materials (CRMs) are available for speciation analysis:
Selenium enriched yeast total selenium and selenomethinone
Wheat flour
total selenium and selenomethinone
Selenomethionine enriched with 76Se
Isotopic abundance 76Se
