Certified reference materials for selenium speciation
Selenium and its compounds are essential for animals and humans, but its physiological nature is ambivalent. It can cause disease by deficiency, but it is toxic at levels less than one order of magnitude above those required for health. Se is present in the environment and in biomaterials in inorganic (Se(IV), Se(VI)) and organic forms. The need for analytical speciation steems from the fact, that bioavailability and toxicity of this element depends on its binding form.
The main issues to be controlled during the analysis of biological tissues for the speciation analysis of selenium are:
- quantitativeness of extraction of the species of interest from the sample material
- preservation of the different species during the analysis
- avoidance of isobaric interferences in mass spectrometry
- overcoming the problem of low analyte levels (lack in sensitivity, preconcentration)
